Chase screwing me by losing my deposit...

A month ago, I deposited a money order at a Chase Branch ATM. The machine jammed and my money order could not be retrieved (deposit slip door shut). There was a receipt of the malfunction and it told me to call the claims department. I freaked out since it was on the weekend and the Branch office would not open till the following Monday. I filed a claim ASAP and I also followed up on the following Monday. The store manager assured me that my money order was ok and I had nothing to worry about since the machine would be cleared and my money order would be there so they added the amount of the check to my account.

Fast forward to today, I receive a call from Chase saying that they were not able to locate the check and asked I had a copy of it. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. So I asked the lady what were the consequences if I did not produce the check and she said they would deduct the amount from my account.

Am I screwed or what?

What can I do? I don't have a copy of the money order and the person who gave it to me left the country.

Cliffs:
Money Order got stuck in the ATM when depositing.
Chase Branch manager assures me everything is fine.
I get call from Chase today saying they can't find the check and they'll deduct the amount from my account.

where did the check come from? Perhaps the issuer has a copy of it

It was a money order that my friend gave me before he left the country. :( I don't remember where it came from but I can ask my friend.

Deduct the full amount of your savings from all of your accounts and move it to another bank.

Really though, see if you can get the other person to vouch/sign for you, and see if they can provide some record of taking out the money order for you.

See the problem is my friend is out of the country so I don't know how I'm going to get the permission of the issuing bank to produce a money order copy for me.

Another problem is I thought that the deposit had been resolved so I may have thrown away my ATM receipt that said of the malfunction. :(

What to do depends on the amount of money and how much that money means to you.

$5 - Forget it

$500 - Take your money out and open an account at a competent bank

The point is, if you have $500 or more take all of it out of the Chase account and open an account at a competent bank. Then close all of your Chase accounts.

They don't deserve your business.

Wish I could do that but I am heavily tied to chase since they got Wamu. :(

Was it one of those new, fancy envelope-less machines? It is cool that it can print a copy on your receipt, but I imagine more checks will get jammed in it.

And then have Chase chase him down for check fraud, that's a good idea.
Only morons deposit their money using an ATM.
I've done it many times without issue. There is always a risk. If it's cash I won't do more than a couple hundred. For checks they can always be reissued so I'll go higher.

Tell your friend to cancel the MO and send you another one or pay you some other way.

Do what my mom did and sit in the lobby until someone comes and asks "Are you being helped" then loudly say "no you guys aren't helping me at all, you stole my money and aren't giving it back".

The ATM people were out within an hour and her check was retrieved from the machine.

Yes it was one of those machines. I talked to a Chase manager today and they told me I was out of luck. Then they gave me BS about depositing MOs in the ATM saying that ATM does not take them. They basically told me to go to the other bank to ask for a copy of the check, just give them the name, amount, time, and day so that the other bank would check to see if the check cleared. Typical run around.

Note to self: Keep digital copies of checks before depositing it to a teller/ATM.

This happened over a month ago. If I knew Chase was this incompetent, I would have done that.

Conclusion:
Chase lost my check.
Good news it was never cashed.
Ask friend to place stop order on check.
I'm out >$500.
The End?

Wow. This tells me never to consider Chase. Good news, since I'm currently pretty close to dropping Citibank.

Don't give up, raise hell. Continually call them or even go into that branch and speak with the manager up front. Their machines fucked up and it should be their fault.

Sorry about the trouble you're having, but anyone who deals with Chase will get screwed sooner or later.

I did, all they could do is apologize profusely and ask I get a copy of the check. Now my friend is irate since he has to pay a $15 fee to cancel the MO/check.
