Charter services down in most of Wisconsin

torpid

Lifer
Today the entire upper peninsula of wisconsin, most of southern wisconsin, and large parts of the northwest part of wisconsin had their charter cable / cable modem services cut off. Since 5am or earlier.

When this happens and charter owns the lines, are they required to reimburse their customers? A coworker told me that they won't reimburse her, but I think they may be legally obligated to do so...

Probably more than $1, but also don't forget that a huge percentage of wisconsin was affected for at least 8 hours (assuming it is now fixed, which I won't bet on). What's to stop them from doing it intentionally next time if they don't have to reimburse?

Why would they do it intentionally? 😕

I've shut down the network here at work intentionally for various legitimate work reasons. Nomrally we expect charter to have redundancies and other solutions for when they have similar situations. If they aren't liable for downtime, they have no motivation for doing that since they have a monopoly in almost all of their areas here.

First off, you'd get a few cents to maybe a dollar back. I doubt they'll refund you unless you're bound to an SLA which states so (which I highly doubt).

We have a T1 connection at work through Sprint so I don't know if Charter is down in La Crosse, WI. I hope it is up when I get home tonight otherwise I'll join the fight in getting a refund. You're right if they don't give refunds they have no reason to keep screwing up. Since they are a monopoly here there is no way to switch for the most part.

I had Comcast Cable do that a few times in a month, so I called and explained my annoyance. They were indifferent at first, until I explained that they now have competition from companies more focused on customer service... like Verizon's new Fiber offering. I got a $10 credit on my next bill.

No, they are in no why shape or form legally obligated to reimburse you.

No way, no how.

Not legally obligated, but you can "vote with your dollar" once Verizon installs fiber for FIOS in your area.

Everyone keeps saying its <$1... they must not know how much charger charges. You would be lucky to get cable or cable modem service for $30/mo in most of wisconsin. And she has both.

I'm having a hard time understanding how a business can get away with cutting off service for a huge portion of the state for over 8 hours without owing their customers anything for their mistake.

Because you are paying for a month of service. Not x number of hours of service.

that an well, "stuff happens."
