So I've been looking into DTV due to my local Charter branch's puzzling decision to not carry the MLB extra innings package as well as a pathetic 12 HD channels. However, if I unbundle my TV service from them, my internet price shoots up to almost $55/mo.

Does that sound, uh, right?

Yes. Comcast in Atlanta does (or did) something similar. Check with your local phone provider. AT&T recently started unbundling DSL with phone service so that you can get DSL by itself with no landline. The price (for me at least) was only $5 more than the the cost of DSL when it is bundled.

Comcast here costs $57.95 if you don't have cable TV. And they put you on a lower speed tier (4000/384 vs 6000/384) and no powerboost either.

My other option here is to get "Blazing fast AT&T DSL at 768/128"

Sounds about right. If you have been a long time Charter customer, call them up, say you are going to switch to DSL and DirectTV and they will offer you 29.99 for 12 months, say no, and depending on how long you have been a customer, they might offer 19.99 for 12 months.

Are you not eligible for 1.5, 3.0, or 6.0mb/s? Like I said in my post above, I'm able to get unbundled (naked) DSL for only $5 more than the bundled price. I see you're in Alpharetta. I'm in Norcross running at 6.0mb/s. I know DSL is distance dependent however.

edit: Actually, when I called AT&T to dump my landline in favor of just the DSL, I was given an offer of a basic landline and DSL at a discounted rate for 6 months ($24) and a basic landline and DSL for what was essentially the cost of the DSL by itself.

I wish there were more options here. It's $48/month for Roadrunner through TWC - WITH a cable subscription. I think that's for 8Mbps. The other option is RR Lite, for $15/month - 768kbps. I'm on that one. Yeah, it's slow. :( But it's better than 56kbps; still, a Youtube video takes about twice as long to download than it does to watch.
I'd like if they had other tiers of service, not just "Super-fast and expensive" and "cheap with sucktacular speed."

Here's a hint - works well if you live with someone. Find the local new customer special, for example I'm on RoadRunner with TWC. They're always running some promo, usually 3 months at $19.99 or 6 months at $29.99. Sign up, enjoy the special period, then cancel. Upon cancelling, have your SO, roommate or whatever order up whatever the current special is. For myself and my wife, this works out great. 10Mbps/1Mbps internet for $29.99/mo. The only catch is if your provider makes you contract up, TWC does not. :)

Yeah, unfortunately due to the distance to the CO and "line quality issues" my DSL modem wouldn't sync any higher than that. According to AT&T my line should qualify for at least the 3mb package. But no tech could figure out why my line wouldn't go any higher.

The only reason why I even wanted to switch was that my Comcast connection was constantly dropping packets and would often just drop completely for hours. I tried going through Comcast to fix it, but they couldn't figure it out in six weeks. So I got fed up and had the DSL line activated.

I tried it for a month, but the speeds were too slow. And two weeks later, Comcast fixed the problem. Shrug.

Tell them to run a new line.

I'm in a similar situation with Cable One. Qwest DSL is more expensive than cable and slower.
