Hi, I'm thinking about getting cable modem service from charter communications. I live in Los Angeles and I was wondering if anybody could give me information about the service. I can't seem to find the price per month or the speed that they run at. I also don't know whether or not to buy a cable modem or rent one from them. Thanks for the help!

Back at my place (southern illinois) I've got 512/256 and I think they're actually pretty good. Its $30 a month here plus $10 for modem rental. I'm still debating buying one. Rates and service may vary, but I give charter 2 thumbs up. They bought out the cable tv company here about a year before btw and really improved on it.

I've got Charter here in Fort Worth and it rocks! Speeds are typically 600KB/s down/12-15KB/s up, and the service is almost never down. My only call to tech support was answered in less than 5 minutes by a real person who solved the problem in 15 minutes, including the time it took to re-sync the modem, and the guy even called me back to make sure it was working... :) I've had Charter cable for over a year with almost no problems at all, much better than my previous DSL setup.

I just found out the rates and the prices:

256k Down / 64k Up -- 29.99 a month
768K Down / 128K Up -- 39.99 a month
1M Down / 256k Up -- i think 70 bucks a month
1.5M Down / 384k up --- 100 bucks!!

I'm a poor college student, so I'm leaning towards the 256k down. But, would it really be worth the extra ten bucks to get 768 down? I just called and they said the modem rental is included with the monthly charge. There is a 30 dollar setup fee. What do y'all think?

thats weak that they cap and then charge by speed, probably because they just don't have the bandwith. (i'm talking about cable and the downstream)

And yes the $10 a month extra for 786/128 is definetly worth it

I have @home and its upcapped down, about the same speeds at the guy in DFW=4800kbs/128kbs. It now costs $46 a month tho, i might by the modem so it will only be $36.

256k Down / 64k Up -- 29.99 a month

wait, so a 1 meg file done in ~4 seconds right? not 40 seconds right? :)
i got a ad for charter in the mail, so if it really is faster download and upload than my 1.5/128 pacbell dsl i'm gonna change over. :)

dc, nope, 256k down equals 256 kilobits, not kilobytes, 8 kilobits per kilobyte, so at maximum speed, a 1 meg file would take 32 seconds.

I had Charter Pipeline for 2 years before I canceled it. The modem was installed in the WEst Covina area. I actually signed on as Charter Pipeline beta testing (Had cable modem for 1 year free! :)) The speed is actually pretty good as long your not in a heavily saturated area. I would hit the advertised speed about 80% of the time.
