Charter cable upgrades user net speeds

There wasn't an official announcement from charter on this but I follow dslreports and found the info below. My own connection which was around 20Mbps/2Mbps before now test at 40Mbps/4Mbps so the changes are taking place. I had really bad packet loss for a day or so and then the speed change. The caps will remain the same and I know some will complain about that , but for me that means I get 250GB a month and that is more than enough for me. It just means that now I don't have to wait as long and can actually consider sending larger files to friends and family.

Thanks to Metatron2008 and Kayrac who have written in to note that Charter Communications will soon be changing their speed tiers. The company's "Express" tier is moving from 12 Mbps down, 1 Mbps upstream to 15 Mbps down, 3 Mbps upstream. Their "Plus" tier is moving from 18 Mbps down, 2 Mbps upstream to 30 Mbps down and 4 Mbps upstream, and their "Ultra" tier is being bumped from 60 Mbps downstream, 5 Mbps upstream to 100 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream.

As some of you have speculated, Charter IS working on speed changes that will be released before the end of the year. As we continue to ready the network, according to your posts, you are already seeing some amazing speed results. We plan to streamline Charter Internet options to: Lite, Express, Plus, and Ultra. Current Max customers will absolutely be able to move to a different level of Internet Service. We’ll announce all of this soon, however, it you have specific questions or would like us to change your Charter Internet Service, please hit us on the Direct Forum, and we will be happy to take care of you.
User Kayrac notes that users currently on Charter's Max 25/3 Mbps tier can get out ahead of the changes to their benefit; downgrading to Charter's 18/2 Mbps right now will save you $15, and you'll ultimately get faster speeds than you have now by being bumped to 30/4 Mbps.

On Monday I set up a new router for my daughter as the wireless on her old one crapped out. After making sure all her wireless stuff would connect, I ran a speed test and got 14/3 (she has the 12/1 plan).

Came home and ran speedtest on my 12/1 charter plan and got 14/1 (14 has been typical). I also rebooted my modem to get the latest settings downloaded to it, still 14/1. So I called charter to whine (whining helps get stuff from them) and was told flat out that 1 was it for upload unless I wanted to upgrade to the next tier.

This was all on Monday......... Wednesday I ran speedtest again and had 15/3.

My only comment: About damn time charter, you service has always sucked, it has just sucked less than any alternative I have where I live.

Some servers produce even better results.

I also noted on TV last night that Charter is still advertizing their "Ultra 60" (60/5) plan, while the article states the "ultra" plan is increasing to 100/5.

Last time I was in an area with Charter and they did an upgrade for all tiers, it also came with a price upgrade after the 1 month "promo" period. So instead of the lowest tier being $40/mo, it was then $55/mo. Yea I canceled the day I got my bill. Good luck.

I wish something that resembled competition came to my area. Stuck with some shitty Time Warner 15/1 plan. During weekend nights it goes down to like, .5/.01

The consensus seems to be that instead of announcing it then doing the upgrades city by city that they would upgrade then let everyone know the new speeds. The idea is that if they announce it before upgrading that they get swamped with people complaining about when the upgrade will take place.
This leaked out after enough people started noticing that speeds were much higher than they should have been.

Hmm your Charter gets upgraded and my Comcast is oddly getting really bad this weekend. It feels like my node is suddenly overcrowded, but I've never had a problem getting my full 2.5MB/s in the past. I downloaded the new 11-11 Catalyst drivers and Firefox lists that it finished at 407 KB/s, and then I downloaded a file in the wee hours of the morning, and it downloaded at 1.8 MB/s.

Ugh, I hate Comcast.

I have been on the 100 mbit "test" for about four months now. Have seen consistent speeds of 11 meg/sec off usenet and about the same for digital river and EA, steam is still 1.5 meg/sec which is blah. Good service and for $80/mo on a 2 year contract it is not horribly expensive...

Positive...

14. NO EXCESSIVE USE OF BANDWIDTH

The Service is for residential use and only within limits that Charter considers reasonable for the service level to which Customer subscribes. Residential service usage for Customers subscribing to the Lite or Express packages should not exceed 100 Gigabytes ("GB") of data per month. Usage for Customers subscribing to the Plus or Max packages should not exceed 250 GB of data per month and usage for Customers subscribing to the Ultra60 package should not exceed 500 GB of data per month. Charter reserves the right to revise or implement additional usage limits at any time.

It is a violation of this Policy to use the Service in excess of these limits. In these cases, Charter may, in its sole discretion, notify Customer of excessive use and (i) request Customer to employ corrective or self-limiting actions to comply with this provision; (ii) suspend or terminate Customer's Service account; or (iii) request that Customer subscribe to a version of the Service (such as a commercial grade Internet service, if appropriate) for use at higher data consumption levels that align with Customer's usage patterns. Charter's determination of the data consumption for Service accounts is final.
