Charter cable bankruptcy expected soon

Well after they placed caps on users it looks like they may be filing for chapter 11 soon. Karma ?

http://www.dslreports.com/show...rter-Bankruptcy-100833

Rumors of a Charter bankruptcy filing have been looming for months, and Moody's investment service has now downgraded Charter for the second time since December. Charter's rating was reduced to "Caa3," nine steps below investment grade, due to the increased likelihood of default -- since the grace period for Charter?s missed interest payments of $74 million expire Sunday. Even if the interest payments are made prior to expiration of the grace period, Moody's anticipates Charter will likely have to file a voluntary petition for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code," Moody's said in a statement.

*dances a crazy ritual and chants and burns some sort of incense*

That's right, Comcast.

I'll take 250GB cap over 100GB cap 🙁

shit, at this point, all I want is internet that doesn't randomly disconnect every 30-60 mins 🙁

Charter service in the Madison area has been TERRIBLE the past couple weeks, with 1/10th the speed we should be getting, 200ms ping to servers we usually ping 20-40 to, and constant disconnects (I say we based on me, one of my friends who lives on the other side of town, and another one who lives 15 miles away in a different town... we're all having the same problems)

I wonder what that means for me?

Since they are the only choice I have for high speed internet where I live.

They just lost their legal monopoly on cable highspeed here, so I'm hoping Verizon steps in, or maybe AT&T does something other than DSL (which I can't get... too far from the repeater :/ )

I'm not a big fan of Comcast (have had them many times over the yeas) but they were always better than Charter from my own personal experiences.

They do cost more though.

I find it hard to believe you can't get DSL through At&t or some other company that's owned by them.

Yes and everyone complains about rates like they are rolling in dough.

I hope it works out or they are quickly bought....

There are a lot of folks that live out in the boonies and are too far from the phone office for DSL. I think that 16,000 feet is the maximum, which means that you're stuck with cable if you're not in the city or the suburbs.

I did also when I bought this house.

But it's true.

I even recheck every few months to see, but nope, nothing.

In my town we have two big providers: Charter (cable) and Frontier (DSL). There are smaller ISPs also which are just resellers and use Frontiers bandwidth. Yeah, I live in the boonies. Charter is the best speed in town.

Cable companies make money like its nobodys business. Just because Charter can't run their business well does not mean others are not raking it in. Heck look how much rates drop when they lose their monopoly like when FIOS come in.

Comcast Profits Jump 54%

How can an ISP, of which there are only like 3 major providers in the the us(charter, comcast, at&t) be doing bad? There are how many million of people on the internet? As a rough estimate, divide that by 3. Multiply that by how much they charge.

Of course they have to pay fees for backbone access and equipment and employees. But if you can't make this work then something is really wrong here.

The industry is so cut throat that it is actually pretty difficult because competition is so high. And there are a ton of providers outside of the ones you listed.

Ahh, that makes sense. If they are only making a penny from each customer per month because they have to lower the cost for competition this will happen.

Last time I checked, Time Warner made hundreds of millions in a quarter... I guess thats what you call cut-throat.

Their service in Tennessee is the same way. I got kicked out of more L4D games than I can count. Now that I have DSL I have been effectively keeping the zombie hordes in check.
