Charte Cable Modem and Linksys Router 54WRGT Speed difference

I have Charter 3MB Cable Internet and I was having problems with some connectivity and speed issues so I called the tech support to get it fixed.

Over the course of the conversation we ended up speed testing my laptop plugged directly into the modem versus it connected to the wi-fi router. When plugged directly in I got 2.9Mbps from 2wire.com's Speed Test but when I did the router afterwards I got 1.9Mbps.

Can you loose that much speed from using a g router? Could the router be malfunctioning? Any networking-wizzes have any advice? Thanks!

To be honest it depends on interference on the wifi channel your router is set to, distance, quality of your wireless network card and its drivers, is your wifi nic 802.11g or 802.11b?

Try running it plugged in to the router as opposed to using wireless. Try changing the channel on your wifi router (use 1, 6 or 11).

it is 802.11g - I was thinking about upgrading the firmware and boosting the signal to see if that would do it - but its a small apartment so I wouldn't think that signal quality would be that bad (unless the walls are lead - which they may be in this old place).
