With the talk of the gov't suspending their 18.4 cents/gallon tax, its interesting to see how varied each state tax is. I love how there is almost a 16 cent difference between NY and NJ.

http://www.energy.ca.gov/gasoline/statistics/gas_taxes_by_state_2002.html

30.3 cents here in NY.

I know suspending all taxes would cause a large loss of income for the government, both state and federal, wouldn't it balance out with other lost taxes and state income b/c people wont drive?

i know that simple thinking, but i'd sure love a 48.7 cent decrease in gas right now.

Please include the programs you would cut to offset the decrease in revenue. Keep in mind that in most states the gas tax goes into a segregated transportation fund, not the general fund.

The lower taxes are offset by the lower gas mileage caused by the drag created when plowing through eleventy billion mosquitos per cubic meter of air.

Congratulations. Not one of those programs is paid for through the gas tax.

It's almost like the gas tax revenues were used to suppliment federal funding and there is an interdependency between.... oh whatever.... how about that Ted Kennedy

Gas tax is NOT the problem. That and if you cut it at the federal level we will go even MORE in debt. And this BS stunt by republicans to give people $100 for gas. Fuvk that. $100 would not even get me to and from work for a month. Then after that $100 is spent it will go right back the republicans pockets, from exxon and other oil companies, when they run for office later this year.

Oh and mind you a lot of that $100 would just be exxons next "profit breaking" quater.

Then the states, if they cut the gas tax, would have to reduce support for roads. So now you save $5 on gas but have to spend a copuple hundred for new tires, shocks, etc... riding on even more crappy roads.

But yea, its the gas tax that is the problem with the price of gas.

Wah, wah, wah. If you dont think gas taxes are a problem (and trust me, they are NEVER going away), then how about $5 a galloon.....in taxes alone!? The only thing that would happen is the pork barrel politicians would get their fat grubby hands on it and piss it away on bridges to nowhere in Alaska, big corporate tax breaks, and all other sorts of waste, fraud, abuse, etc.

The way I see it, Pennsylvania can afford to lose theirs - they don't seem to spend any of that fund money anyway.

Maryland can afford to lose theirs because their roads are in damn good shape as it is, and could survive a few years of abuse before needing much work.

WTF?! I wish people would stop publishing those stupid charts.
Well, the news is out. My wonderful state leaders are going to say "Whoa! We're not in the top 3!" (like we are for any other tax).
Oh well, I suppose I should be happy that NY is 8th instead of 1st in at least one tax area...

these gas taxes should go UP to help pay for roads and encourage people to drive more efficient cars to reduce our dependence on oil!

Oh, and for what it's worth, the idea of the government suspending the gas tax is retarded... Sure, let's put the country even further into debt.

why would you want to encourage use of fuel efficient cars through higher taxes if you want to help pay for better roads. It would probably be a wash. If anything fuel efficient cars should be taxed at a higher rate..............

Then the non-surprising backlash when the suspension is over and the prices go up by 30-60 cents again. Just dumb.

Not to stir the pot, but I'd like to see a map that shows gas taxes in comparision with red/blue states. Out of pure curiosity.

Its is mixed, blue and red that is. most taxs are very close and some big red states and blue states are high and some are low.

Oh and I love how this chart is by the American Petroleum Institute. I guess they are trying to get all the dumb voters to go hey its the tax that made my gas go up not the oil companies that are padding the wallets of the republicans that control the white house, senate, and congress.

So I can pay $3.20 for a gallon and have decent roads and pad the wallets of the oil companies and republicans.

Or pay $2.80 and drive on pot hole infested/dirt roads and pad the wallets of the oil companies and republicans.

Yea it?s the gas tax that is the problem.

Higher taxes = increased income that goes to roads and also encourages fuel efficient cars, and the taxes can be changed over time as more and more people get efficient cars to get the required income to maintain the roads.
