Every time one of my rock idols from the 60's passes on it feels like a piece of me got cut off.

RIP Charlie, you and the boys gave me a lot of fond memories to reminisce on. Rock on. I'll tune my axe to Keith's fave open G and play some Brown Sugar/Jump'in Jack Flash riffs in your honor.

Salute.

I was just watching a recently posted video of him dancing offstage on youtube and thought to myself "he sure seems to be in great shape for an 80 year old." It was announced recently that he was going to sit out a few shows on the upcoming Stones tour because of doctor's orders-the first shows he would have missed since 1963.

Not a huge Stones fan, but always greatly respected him.

what surprised me was reading that he was with his wife for 56 years, a bit unusual in rock.

RIP

He was alright, nothing special—but I do admire his work ethic. I don’t think I could ever do *anything* for damn near 60 years, nevermind hammering a drum kit with any competence. He kept right at it until the end at 80…and he was bandmates with Keith Richards for chrissakes!!!

"He was alright"

Shitlol! The Stones were his side gig. A jazz musician first and foremost... he's been playing clubs & small venues for years with professional jazz musicians with significant talent.

He was alright indeed...

WTF?
Only ranked the number 12 best drummer of all time.

with all due respect, he wouldn't make it to the top 100 on a serious list.
let me guess, John Bonham at N1, Ringo at N2, and no mention of Marco Minnermann, DeJohnette, Colaiuta or Black or Bozzio, Igor Cavalera, and why not Lars Ulrich. God forbid we put actually good drummers on the "best drummers" list.

well, damn, wouldn't you know, they *do* have John Bonham at N1.

seriously, Rolling Stone is not a reputable music publication. it never was.

I know *personally* drummers better than Watts. In fact, you would struggle to find a drummer worse than Watts if you watched youtube druming videos. I get that you might like the music, but that doesn't make him a good drummer. He *was* very basic with his drumming, almost a trademark for him.

Let's compare.
vs actually good drummer
and, i mean, that's just going with what's reasonable to expect you to know. Nothing obscure.

Think I read somewhere he gave up drugs about 38 years ago. 80 is surprisingly good for a rock n roll drummer from that era where heavy drug use was the norm and caution thrown to the wind. Mick Jagger is only 77 or 78. Hopefully he lives longer.
