Well NV have a typical margin of ~40~50% so that means a 60% yield would be about right.
I think it's fairly easy to assume ATI are making more profit though, although how much more is another matter, and it also depends on volumes, especially when the GTX460 is at a lower price point (while only the HD5830 fits in the same point).

Nvidia can probably afford to barely make a profit for awhile on a part, just look at how profitable G92 has been. They've been releasing parts based on it for almost 3 years now.

They might be planning to do the same with GF104.

Charlie is so full of shit it's amazing his eyes don't shoot out of his head like bullets. Those out of the ass guestimates for component costs are nowhere near accurate. IMO they're +-30%, at best.

Also, selling 1 million midrange GPUs is child's play. Add in the R&D and marketing being split across the entire Fermi family and his analysis is good only for generating pageviews.

The real good news is this is a good part for the volume market, with decent margins for AIBs who have been on a starvation diet of G92 parts until now. Had this come a few months earlier BFG may have still been with us today.

Where the heck have you been? Did you miss Char-lie's little GEM, just 3 weeks ago about GTX 460 predictions?

http://www.semiaccurate.com/2010/06/21/what-are-nvidias-gf104-gf106-and-gf108/

i'd say that Char-lie's prediction about GF104 is an absolute mess

:p

that's true, but in the lead up to fermi it became a charlie fermi-bashing fest. in this one he made a comment 3 wks ago and stopped writing about it. I really think that he has one or more good sources, and they told him to shut his trap because gtx 460 was going to be a winner.

Nice how the sa article spends more time examining profit margins than performance. Who cares if they're making money today if they're stopping the bleeding and can end up with a profitable gtx 460 run through the rest of the year? It sure worked well for amd with 4850/70.

what did you expect to hear when you started your first post with "not be a complete douche but..."?

Charlie has a large following here (for obvious reasons). It's similar to people who watch and believe everything on Fox News.

He's been proven wrong often enough that it's a wonder anyone would buy into his shtick. But it's his bias that certain people are attracted to. Sad but true.

That AMD supports his site through advertising, has soured my opinion of them.

Gosh darn it, gigabyte are doing that too. They must be in cahoots together.

He is an oracle. You just have to read between the lines.

See next quote.

He is basically a fortune teller who most people only remember when he is right, and they forget all the crap he says that doesn't come true.

Basically how it works is a fortune teller says things that are reasonable yet vague, and then explain "that's what I meant" afterwards, and everyone believes! Magic!

The same problem that affected GF100 are going to hit the GF10x parts, and Nvidia is going to end up doing the same things to make salable parts, fuse-off bad clusters while downclocking like mad.

Does Charlie mean like how AMD fuses off bad CPU cores? Or how the first G92 had 112 cores instead of the full 128? Or how SSDs and hard drives keep some space unused?

He does? That's news to me. (har har)

Of course, he was right about how late nV would be with the GTX 4x0. And he was right about how hot and power-hungry the GTX 480/470 are. Plus, him sniffing out the fake GTX 480 Huang was waving around. Actually, you know, he's right about a lot of shit. That doesn't change the fact that he's as annoying as that idiot Madcow Maddow or MSNBC, and I avoid his site like a would a fresh plague victim.

But just so we're clear, he isn't wrong as often as you're leading on. We'll just "keep it real". What do ya say? :)

While fox news isn't perfect, there are plenty of worse sources... and by that I mean it is (sadly) the best of the TV broadcasters. CNN, MSNBC, etc are not nearly as reliable, and significantly more biased.
The situation with TV news is so bad I don't even bother with it at all.
