Every month I give $20 to the ASPCA and $20 to my local animal shelter. I've done this for quite a while and started thinking that maybe I should just give it all to my local shelter instead. The ASPCA is not active in my community and I'm kind of wondering what they do with that money....

What do you guys think?

30% General and Admin, 30% Sales and Marketing, 30% salary to the founder, 10% net to the intended recipient. Gotta love non-profits.

Why not give $240/year instead of $20/month? That way, they can save a bundle on handling all of those miniscule payments.

To answer your question: Link.

* 82% of their money goes to their programs (the rest is the cost of collecting and processing the payments and administration fees).
* $21M goes to humane education and outreach
* $9M goes to animal hospitals
* $5M goes to animal placement and behavior training
* $4M goes to animal poison control center
* $4M goes to humane law enforcement.

As someone who directly deals with processing gifts to non-profits, it is certainly much nicer to get one check for $240 than 12 checks for $20. Makes my job a lot easier. However, if the $240 was given at the end of the year, we stand more to gain as a non-profit by getting the $20 per month and putting it in an interest bearing account. If the $240 was given at the beginning of the year, we get more money from it (same reason). So the recommendation would really be based mostly around when the money could actually be donated. Don't save up for a year just to give a lump sum at the end; it's worse for us (better for you, although it's more temptation for you to spend it and then not be able to give as much as you thought at the end of the year).

As far as what you should give to, that's entirely up to you. If you feel the ASPCA doesn't do enough in your community, give it all to your local shelter. I'm sure they could use it more than the ASPCA.
