Charging cell batteries

I have heard conflicting information. Is it best to charge when fully depleted or trickle charge all along

Do not deplete lithium-ion batteries because it will reduce the life span of your batteries. Modern batteries have circuitry that prevents them from being fully depleted and usually reserves a percentage of charge to maintain a minimum voltage in the battery. Depleting it repeatedly will greatly increase the risk of going below the minimum voltage, at which point your battery will not recharge.

Dont let Lithium Ion drain all the way empty. Its bad.

And no its NOT bad to leave them in the charger. The phone knows to cut off current when its full, so as not to damage the battery.

My friend is convinced that will make them swell up and explode. Cannot convince him it is ok. Anyone ever see this info on a battery manufacturers site?
