Charging batteries with different volts/amps?

lets say i have a battery that charges with a 9 volt 2 amps dc charger. I haven't done this but could i use a 9 volt 1.5 amp charger, or a 5 volt 2 amp, or a 5 volt 1.5 amp. Is the charge volts / amps recommended or a maximum? Detailed explanation if at all possible please

If you used a 5V charger, it would only charge to a bit more than half it's capacity. If you used 9V charger, but with 1a, it would take longer to charge. If you used a 9V 3a charger it would take less time to charge, but it might damage the battery by charging too fast.
