Characters stacking on top of each other in MS Word

Don't know if anyone has seen this before but I've ran into a few incidents where all the characters of each line of text is bunched up as if each character is top of the previous. I can't seem to find any formatting or setting to undo this. I usually just use the Detect and Repair and things go back to normal.

I've seen this issue before, it only affected the default font at the default size, ie you could highlight all text and change to 10pt and the text would be normal'ish again. From what I recall deleting all the users temporary files was the solution to the problem.
