changing your [real] name

rh71

No Lifer
Anyone have any experience in this ? This is for someone who is cutting off a part of their first name as well as changing their last name to add the husband's name.

I know you can go to the DMV and fill out forms to change your name on your license, but what about for everywhere else like credit cards, social security, etc. ? Do we have to go to each place separately ??? Are we forgetting anything else ?

To officially change your name you have to go through the Social Security Administration. There is a form and usually it takes 6-8 weeks.

Thanks for the info. Is there any kind of trickle-down effect from this ? Or will we still have to call each credit card company or whatever else we're forgetting... ?

Would it be totally legal to changing your name to something like...."Fvcking Pirate"?

I don't see why not, after all a gentleman did change his name to Optimus Prime. 🙂

... and file a petition for a change of name in the state court where you live. You do-it-yourself lawyers scare the hell out of me sometimes 😛😉🙂

Uh... no... That is why the court is there. To prevent you from subjecting the rest of the populous to your idiocy.

Change of name in a state court... why is this needed ? Aren't we all tagged with just our SSN or do you mean this is a part 2 step that must be taken ?

How do we go about filing this ? Is the form only at the courts ?

I changed my first name when I became a citizen. I was using the new name since day one anyway, just not on official forms.

See, she changed it when she became a citizen too... but now wants to change her first name again to shorten it so she doesn't have 3 first names. 😉 Still possible through SS ?

Can't you do this with the paperwork for your marriage license without the need for the standard court petition filing? I thought I remembered that marriage was the one time you could do it this.

bleh, if you get married that pretty much takes care of that problem. Hey, and at $250/hour, I'll take my chances 😛

that's the thing... we applied for our marriage certificate and requested her first name be changed too but they said only the last name can be changed at that time. 😕 We want both done for her.
