I hope that this is OK to post here.
I'm running Win2K (SP4) with IE 5.5 (SP2)
A while ago I DLed Microsoft's beta version of their Anti Spyware product. The installation would not continue saying that it needs IE 6.0 or greater to be installed in order to proceed.
So i thought i would fool the installer into thinking that version 6.0 is installed by hacking the registry. I Googled and found some links that show how you can view the version number stored in your registry - and I edited one of the keys to show "6.0" but no luck with that.
Another link that states that you can view the version number via the Shdocvw.dll file in your WINNT or Windows directory.
This beta product installer could very well be examining the Shdocvw.dll as it installs or it maybe examining both this file along w/ some keys in the regisry to determine what version is installed on my PC. I simply dont' know.
So my options are: Upgrade from 5.5 to 6.0 - which I really don't want to do. IE 5.5 has been working flawlessly for me past several years and don't really want to upgrade unless I absolutely must or somehow hack this Shdocvw.dll so that it appears as though I have 6.0 installed.
I believe the older versions of this software (previous to being bought out by MS) did not require IE 6.0 installed. If by chance anyone has an older version of Giant Spyware could you please PM me? I appreciate any help. TIA.
