Changing Taskbar Quick Launch Default Ordering?

How can I change the default ordering of icons in the Quick Launch (or any other toolbar), on the taskbar?

By default, I think icons appear to order themselves alphabetically. I know you can move them around, etc, but I'm looking for a way to change the default setting. For example, instead of by name, by date, by size, etc. Modifying the order within the folder of a toolbar, isn't reflected on the taskbar.

I assume it may be stored in the registry somewhere?

I do that simply by dragging and dropping in the taskbar. In reboot, that order change is preserved. AFAIK, the "default" is the order in which they were initially assigned.

I tried that, but upon reboot, it seems to alter the ordering. It seems to go alphabetically upon reboot.

If I rename a shortcut and then restart explorer manually, the renamed/modified shortcut moves to the end.

Interesting. Mine always stay where I put them - even with customized icons. I am in Win 7.

Have you explored Taskbar Properties? That is where you can customize it.

It wouldn't surprise me if your profile data isn't being saved on log-off. I'd check the event logs (specifically the application log).

BTW, this is supposed to be the Registry entries for that:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband”.

I had a look yeah. Always seems to default to alphabetical order upon restart. For now I've just organised them alphabetically, using the odd small symbol prefixed to order them how I want. Shame there's no proper way of doing it, the toolbar shortcuts have some good uses.
