Changing serial key on win2k on an old install...

Other than your gratification, why does this matter? Win2K doesn't call home, so who cares what serial # you have in a box?

I'd say sysprep is still your best option; it is quite configurable though, so using a cfg prebuilt for someone elses systems may not work for you.

Failing that, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just be sure and keep that license you've recently purchased in a safe place and don't use the CD-key for anything else. 😉

I can't get windows updates w/o feeling scared that i'll get tracked...😱

Assuming that you have a computer that can boot from CD.

Boot the computer with the legit CD as the first boot. Choose the second option of setup (Not the repair from Console), it will start the setup and would prompt you to type the CD key, type the legit CD key, and let it go thought the motions (it might take about 30-45 min.).

At the end, you would have a refreshed Win2000 with the legit key, all your programs, and all the settings as it was.

If the new CD is not SP4, when done, log to Microsoft and update to Win2000 SP4.
