Not sure what all the fuss is about in other discussions on changing SATA controller mode in BIOS after Windows is already installed. I initially installed W10 on a new-old PC I just acquired (4th Gen Haswell) in single drive RAID mode and wanted to change to AHCI for performance comparison after running benchmarks. All I did was to...
- Uninstall the SATA drive (SSD) from Device Manager first
- Uninstall the Intel 8 Series RST/SATA RAID controller from Device Manager, clicked OK to close Device Manager. It prompted to restart but I deferred
- Opened System Config, set to reboot into Safe Mode and clicked apply, then restarted
- Entered BIOS Setup, changed SATA mode from RAID to AHCI, saved and exit then allowed PC to reboot into Windows Safe Mode. It negotiated the change, installed devices and prompted to restart. I deferred the restart, opened System Config to deselect Safe Mode and clicked apply
- Restarted PC when prompted and it booted into Windows normally, with the correct 'MS' AHCI drivers. Then installed the latest Intel-provided SATA AHCI controller driver. Restarted once more.
