Changing resolution without using properties interface??

This *may* not belong in here, if it doesn't moderators feel free to move it to wherever it belongs. I'm wondering if it's possible to change resolution / color settings on a computer manually without using the properties interface... if so would any of you experts know how to do this?

I wrote an assembly program that uses video bios interrupts to change between vesa-standard video modes... except windows wouldn't change, it would just act like a fullscreen dos window. its only a few lines (set up the mode in the registers, call an interrupt)
