hi guys,

i just received a computer from a friend which has Windows XP Home Edition on it. however, the computer has all of my friend's info on it under the "REGISTERED TO:" under System Properties.

now, i have done a search on that users name, and edited it to the name that i want to be there, however, upon a reboot, the name does not get changed, and a new brand gets created with the original Registered name. i would appreciate it if anyone could help me out on this one.

thanks in advance...

suggest you run regedit & under edit/find type in the name of your friend exactly how he's registered.
the display name key should come up & edit it!

Either what bacillus said, or search under RegisteredOwner or RegisteredUser. Hope this helps.

ojai00:

thanks bud, as your comment did the trick. i had earlier searched the registry for the name that appeared, however it took me to a different location. When i did a search for "RegisteredOwner", it took me to a setting i had never been before. I just edited it to what i wanted it to see, and now the name has changed nicely. :)

For those wondering where it is located in a Windows XP Pro/Home computer, go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

in that directory, one will see all the nice info regarding and pertaining to registration, current build, product id, etc...

I also put the Windows NT directory there in bold due to the fact that whenever i normally search under the registry, i usually go into the 'Windows' directory under the Microsoft folder and not the 'Windows NT'.

i hope this helps someone else out in the future... :)

thanks again all....
