Changing names of computers...

I was wondering if there was a way to change the names that show up in Net Neighborhood of comps. My network primarily uses TCP/IP.

After you change the names, edit the "hosts" file on all computers, changing the old names to the new names.

Editing the host files can be a tedious process if you have a lot of computers. It would be easier to just change the Network ID name (in win95/98/me) in Win2000 use the Network Identification Wizard. if all else fails you can edit the lmhost file, but remember 4 things about this:

1. you must make sure to copy it too all computers on your network either manually or using replication

2. this list doesn't update itself. so any new changes require you to manually re-edit the list

3. Make sure that you you don't mix up names. it soulds dumb, but if you have a lot of computers that you are changing the names of it is concievable that errors could be made

4. the lmhost file is just nicknames for the computers. as far as the network is concerned the computers are still thier orriginal names. the only way to REALLY change them is to change their network ID

Good luck

It might be easier to just fill in the computer discription line on the PCs. Then when you view net hood in detailed form the info shows. Not really what you wanted but a lot less work.
