I'm taking a Radeon VE out of my rig (Windows XP) and installing a Radeon 8500. What do I need to do to make sure the drivers for the VE have been removed? How do I remove them, I guess is what I'm asking?

Does Win XP do everything for you? (that would be nice :))

ATI usually has an uninstall routine that will wipe out the drivers, if you installed it with ATIs setup program. If not, just set your card up as standard VGA, swap it out, pop the new card in and run the install driver program for the 8500.

When I built this system, I didn't install any drivers for the video card or run any ATI programs. I simply popped the card in and WinXP did everything.

Now, what should I do? Should I just take out the VE and put the 8500 in and let XP do the rest?

Sure, but get the latest drivers for the 8500 and install em, or XP may see the old radeon drivers as being compatable with the newer 8500 and leave em on.

Id Uninstall your vid card drivers before installing the Radeon 8500! I moved from a Xpert 98 to RadeonLE and I didnt unistall the Xperts drivers. Well the drivers collided!!! It took some time to fix, but it was a big hassle that could have been easily avoided!

Can you do this in XP?

I was trying out different drivers for my 64MB old Radeon and wanted to install standard VGA drivers in between, but I couldn't find any way to do so. Somebody enlighten me, please. (I used to be able to do it in 98, btw).

Okay, I took out my VE and put the 8500 in. Then, I installed the newest recommended 8500 drivers on ATI's site. Now, there are flickering horizontal red lines flashing across the screen. They are very fine lines, but very noticeable on a dark background. What could be the problem?

Hmmm. Are you using an LCD screen? If you are try setting the screen to its native res. I get the same thing on one of my LCD screens if I try non native res. Also, reinstall the driver again and if it asks if you want to keep a driver answer no.

Okay, I uninstalled the 8500 and reinstalled it. This time I didn't install any ATI drivers -- or any drivers for that matter. The picture looks the same and I'm still having the same problems. It also locks up in games. Any ideas?
