Changing my old gtx260

Hi,

Next week I'm going to sell my old gtx260 core-216 and buy a new card.

Im considering:

Gtx460 1gb
5850
6870

I've seen many, many different opinions about those cards. Some say go for 6870, other that I should OC gtx460 so it's performs like 6870. I've tried to check those cards thoroughly here http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU11/214 but this benchmark must be wrong or the rating isn't fps.

Or should I wait for gtx560?

I'll play at 1680x1050
Q6600 @3Ghz
3Gb Ram DDR2 800
Chieftec 450W
Abit IP35-E

What do you suggest?

What's wrong with the bench you found? It looks right, although that's a game that favors nVidia.

Here's a bench of your card versus a GTX460: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/170?vs=180. The difference is significant, but not huge. Probably not worth the upgrade.

If you're looking for a major upgrade, you'd want to go to at least an HD5870, which is currently available for $200AR. The GTX560 will likely match the HD5870 in performance but cost far more than $200. Here's a link to the HD5870 deal: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2131303.

Lots of people are saying the GTX560 will lead to big changes in card pricing, but I doubt it. We already know it will perform between a GTX470 and GTX570, and we also know it can't be less than $250, because that's where the GTX470 is. It will probably be closer to $260-280, given that AMD is preparing an HD6950 1GB card in that price range.

Oh, yeah, and welcome to the forums!

Well...if you are into artificial benchmarks then get the 460...if on the other hand it's gaming performance you are after then the 6870 is the best choice.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU11/197 look here. From what I know, it's impossible fo gtx460 to achieve 44fps at Metro 2033 - 1680 x 1050 - DX11 High Quality + 0xAA/16xAF.

I'd buy 5870 but I live in Poland and the prices here are insane. It's approximately 320$.

Maybe, but I've always been a huge fan of nvidia and it's hard for me to consider radeon 😛

Hi 🙂

The effect of the GTX560 release in European markets may be more significant than in the U.S., where many cards are currently already discounted. So yes, in your case, wait until the GTX560 introduction. I'm guessing that it will not be in the same price range as the cards you listed, but it will also be faster, so it could be worth it.

In that case the GTX 560 should fit in your budget. If you need something that's released right now the GTX 470 is a good buy too.

560 = 470 in terms of performance

I doubt that. GF114 will have higher texture and pixel fill-rate than a stock 470. 384 @ 820mhz is going to be at least 10-15% faster than a GTX470 until it runs out of VRAM (which will happen beyond 2560x1600 4AA). Add to this “full speed” FP16 texture filtering and 470 doesn't stand a chance.

OP, coming from a GTX260-216, the minimum upgrade would be a an HD5870 imo. I wouldn't bother with any of the other cards you listed. Also at 1680x1050, there shouldn't be a single game that a 260-216 can't handle. You should upgrade your monitor first if anything. Keep in mind, at 1680x1050 the bottleneck starts to shift towards the CPU. With slower CPUs like Q6600 @ 3.0ghz, I would lean towards the HD5870 over an NV card.

Well to be honest i don't need to upgrade my monitor really. It's just enough for me.

Thanks for your help guys. I'll go for gtx560 or (if the price is too high) 6870 (or 5870).

But If I were to buy gtx460 anyway, which version would you choose?

EVGA GTX 460 1GB Superclocked
MSI GTX 460 HAWK 1 GB
ZOTAC GeForce GTX 460 1 GB Amp!
Gigabyte GTX460 1024MB 256bit OC2

I've heard that evga and msi are good, but gigabyte seems to have a good cooling.

I have an MSI Cyclone that I really like.

If you can get a hot deal on a 460 I say go for it. It is worth waiting for the 560 though; its launch is imminent.

I made that same upgrade on a 1680x1050 monitor last year, except I went to a gtx 460-768 instead of 1gb. I did it b/c I had money to burn, but honestly for ~ 30% performance (after an oc to 900 core/4400 memory) increase it was a waste of money even at $146. If you can spent $250-280 just get a 6950 2gb, that will be significantly faster than any of those other cards and will be a worthy upgrade for you. plus, with the 2gb ram it will still be useful at very high AA levels, higher resolution, potential eyefinity setups in the future, etc etc.

Perhaps you should include this sort of information in your original post. Just to give ppl the full picture when they are just trying to be helpful & recommending Radeon cards at US prices.

On the plus side, at least you did bother to include system info in OP. But what games/res is this upgrade for?

The res is 1680x1050

As for the games, basicly the new and upcoming titles like The Witcher 2, Crysis 2 (hopefully 😛), Rage, Elder Scrolls V, Mass Effect 3, Deus Ex etc.

I'd like to experience DX11 in games though I do realize that the card I'm going to buy (either gtx560 or 6870 or similar) may be not good enough.

Around 250-280$ max.

Then wait on GTX560. Only a week away and I believe it's in your price range here. From what I can tell, the 560 will be along the lines of GTX470/5870 performance at stock speeds. But wait for benches anyway. So close you might as well wait.
