Changing motherboards

I'm swapping out the micro-atx motherboard from my compaq presario s6900nx for a new one. Will I be able to do this, because I heard motherboards in HPs are proprietary.
 
Check the power connections on the motherboard and PSU and check the case front panel connections for reset, power, etc. Check the rear panel plate to see if it can be replaced with one from the new mobo or if it matches the new board.

If those are all standard you should be okay.
