im trying to decide what to change my major too, this was my first year in college and i ****** up because i chose "video production" as my major because i think it would be cool to be a director, well my cousin is a director and he was a biochemist major. but ive recently decided to say screw all that it is a long shot anyway. and now i am taking 1 class(english 122) while trying to decide what i should change my major too so i can take classes next semester. i was thinking english but than i researched and the only thing you can do with an english degree is become a teacher. than i was thinking history but what can you do with a history degree? researched turned up as lawyer or politician. am i looking in the wrong places for what degrees can and cant do?

CLIFFS:
screwed around 1st year in college
picked the wrong major
changing my major
need help finding places for degrees and what the can do

You don't need a major to take classes, especially for the first or second year.

take general classes that your school requires for all majors while you figure it out.

you can go to the departments that your interested in and get more information too, i'm sure.

Heh. You think changing your major early on is bad. Try changing it halfway through the 2nd semester of your junior year, like I did. :p This is really a question for whoever your undergrad advisor is. Like someone else here pointed out, unless your school has some kind of strict major declaration policy, you should be able to take a variety of different classes in your first 2 years. In fact, I'd almost recommend it just to get exposure to lots of different area to help you decide on a major. The "however" part is that some majors may have prerequisites that you'll need to complete in your first two years in order to schedule your junior and senior years properly.

EDIT: Clarification of vague statement

you're usually allowed to screw around your first year of college. its why they load your first two semesters with gen ed courses.

dont limit yourself to a "degree and the job it can offer me", because you can get whatever degree you want and still work in the career of your choice. if you have the passion for said career, you will follow that path regardless of what degree you have. that said, if you don't know what you want to do yet then pick a major that offers lots of flexibility. business management, economics, any variety of engineering majors - those will get your foot in the door for many job opportunities.

you can do a lot in the publishing industry with a english degree. I'm thinking of going to become an editor.
