i emailed a friend of the family who knows a lot about computers with my problem. he said that there's an article in the microsoft knowledge base about receiving 169.254.x.x IPs and how to resolve it. i searched and couldnt find anything. can anyone help? ive had this stuff for about a month and still cant connect to the internet, im freaking pissed off!

Hey,
sorry i've been away from the forums:
the 169 address means that you are not getting an ip assigned by the router....
the only thing left that i can think of, is to change the wireless channel on the router.....try every one, and give the computer a few tries (reboot a few times, try reconnecting a few times) for each channel....if that doesn't work, then have linksys replace the router under warranty, it could be a hardware problem.

i pretty much have tried every channel without any luck. i emailed linksys and they tell me to maually assign an IP while you guys say to use the automatic settings. ive tried both and i still cant get anything. im still wondering though, if the xp machine can SEE the wireless network and connect to it, why isnt it connecting to the internet? could there really be a problem with the router?

I have seen other people have similar wireless problems, that were fixed by getting a new router under warranty....(assuming all of the things we have tried here failed)

the absolute LAST thing that you can try, is to have another wireless machine (laptop/desktop/whatever) placed right next to the machine that is having trouble, and try connecting....

at least if that one also doesn't work, then we can say it is the router....
if it does work, it could be the pci card in the desktop.

see if you have a buddy with a laptop setup for wireless, and have him come over and check it out.

if you have access to a different wireless PCI card, or a wireless USB, give that a shot too

im 13 and most of my friends have trouble turning computers on. all they know is AIM and how to get spyware.
the absolute LAST thing that you can try, is to have another wireless machine (laptop/desktop/whatever) placed right next to the machine that is having trouble, and try connecting....
like i said before, i had my old machine down here and it connected fine. should i bring it down here and try again? i can usually get case/mouse/kb in one trip then the monitor, it isnt much hassle.

well, my thoughts are:
we already know it works from downstairs,
what we need to find out is this:

when upstairs, is it the pci card in the computer causing the problem, or the router causing the problem?

the only way i can think to test that is to find some sort of other wireless device, and test it upstairs.

if anyone can think of another alternative.....

HMMM...
still seems that you need to clarify whether it is the router or the card....do you have any other wireless devices at all in the house? maybe another computer that you can put the PCI card in?
