Hi,
what sort of errors is winipcfg throwing up at you? you did not need to change the ip address of your router, it was fine.
your computer with the errors may have it's ip address manuall assigned, make sure it is set for DHCP or more literally "obtain ip address automatically"

If it is already set to obtain automatically, then it is possible your router is still giving out ip addresses based on what the router USED to have....if this is the case, you should manually assign the following IP to your computer that isn't working:

IP address: 192.168.0.20
network mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

this should allow you to get back into your router (you probably won't be able to surf the net though, because your dns settings will be blank)
my advice is to go back into your router and set the ip back to the way it was (192.168.1.1)

Any computer you have that is using the internet through that router (the one you are on now?) should be able to connect to the router, using the new ip address that you gave it...

The issue you are having with the fatal error, is usually indicative of a network card driver issue....
try going into the hardware manager in windows and remove your network card (uninstall) and then reboot....it should find and reinstall your network card, and hopefully eliminate the error.

good news, it worked. im on this computer (win98) now. as of now im following the instructions that came with the linksys wireless pci card thats in my computer, the one i was on before. i put the card it, but when i start windows, it doesnt start the new hardware wizard. for some reason it installs the drivers automatically or something. but then i cant see the wireless network. ive uninstalled the drives, unhooked the wireless card, booted windows (the drivers werent listed), then shut down, installed the card, and rebooted. when i try to run setup.exe off the cd, the program starts then exits. what am i doing wrong now? is there a problem with win98se/winxp communicating?

my guess is that i dont have a correct setting in the software on the xp machine. ive read in tutorials about setting the IP and subnet mask and gateway and that stuff, but i dont know what any of it is. am i on the right track, do i need to set these things up?

ive found that in my linksys setup page, i have the following settings:

IP Address: 24.2.206.122
Subnet Mask: 255.255.254.0
Default Gateway: 24.2.206.1
DNS 1: 204.127.202.4
DNS 2: 216.148.227.68

in xp, i right clicked on the wireless network, went to properties, selected Internet Protocool (TCP/IP), and hit properties. i changed everything to those settings, and still cant get to the net.

sorry....i've been eating turkey ;)

hmmm. sounds like you have quite a little pickle here...

first thing is this: the linksys ip and netmask, etc is for the router only....your router will assign a new address to the computer....something in the way of the 192.168.xxx.xxx

it is essential that you let this happen

now, the first step is to be able to FIND the wireless network from your computer, then we will work on ip address settings.

if the setup program is disappearing when you start it, then that means it is crashing. Windows XP should have it's own drivers though, so it should not be a problem

so, we should at this point have your cable modem hooked into the router (in the WAN port) and one of your computers (win98??) hooked into the router and working properly.
so....the problem now is the windows XP one, which connects wirelessly to the internet

let me know if i have all of this right so far, and we will look further

correct. i have the cable modem going to the router in the WAN port. then the wireless router, which also has 4 wired ports, is wired to this computer, Win98. this is where i change all the Linksys settings. then i have my WinXP machine right next to me which should be connected wirelessly.

edit: to make this easier, would you want to go by email or AIM?

ok....so it looks like we are down to just getting the wireless part working...

on your windows xp machine,

1) have the network connection set to obtain an ip automatically
2) check off the little box in the network properties that says show icon in taskbar when connected.
3) give the xp machine a clean reboot
4) right click on the icon in the taskbar for the network connection. and choose "view available wireless networks"

see if your linksys wireless is found, and click the box that says allow me to connect to this network even though it is not secure...

let me know what you come up with

under available wireless networks, i get "Linksys". i click the checkbox and then hit connect, but then a bubble pops up from the tasbar that reads "Wireless Network Unavailable"

ok, now we're cooking....if you can get that far, then we are almost there!

1) go into the network properties, and go to the wireless notwork tab
2) click the advanced button and make sure that any available network is selected, and automatically connect to non preferred networks is checked.
3)click on configure in the main window, and make sure wep in not enabled, and also check the router setup and make sure that wep is not enabled...

see if that works and try to reconnect again

winxp and 98 are not always the easiest to share files between, but your xp machine is communicating with your router, not the win98 machine (yet)
it is always good to disable WEP and any other obscure options when troubleshooting a connection...
another thing you can try, is to switch your wireless card to a different slot on your motherboard....certain slots share resources with other slots, and can sometimes cause conflicts.

try that and let me know. Thanks

ah man, i just brough it upstairs to my room, only up one floor, and now it cant find the network. i know people who have a wireless network set up where it goes between 3 floors. what might be my problem now? should i point the antenna down towards the floor? the Linksys network still comes up as being available, does that mean i need to mess around with the settings again?
