Changing IRQs

Right now my Creative Audigy X Gamer card is on IRQ 17. I want to play a really old game of mine, and it'll only look for a sound card up to IRQ 7. My IRQ 7 slot is currently free, and I was wondering how I could change the IRQ of my sound card to 7, and if it is safe to do so.

Thanks.

if you don't mind reinstalling xp then there is a chance!
is the game worth the hassle?

I'm curious why he would need to reinstall XP. Can't he just assign #7 to the slot the card occupies in PCI Configuration in the BIOS, and won't it automatically change in XP? That's what's happened when I've done it.

I didn't see anything like this in the BIOS. I'll check again.

unfortunately the bios for that board doesn't allow you to assign a specific irq to a specific slot!

Yechh! I'm surprised that a mobo of this caliber, even though it's an MATX, would be so feature-deprived.

Is this game a old DOS game? I assume it is, because only a old DOS game would need to know the IRQ of your soundcard...

If you want sound in a DOS program in 2k or XP your going to be disappointed. The DOS emulator in 2k and XP does not support sound! Changing the IRQ of your soundcard will do absolutely nothing.

However there is a way to get sound support: You need to use a program called VDMSound which you can get here --> http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/

It emulates a SoundBlaster, and you can pick whatever IRQ number you want the program emulate.

Woohooo! Yes, I was trying to play an old DOS game. I guess I should have mentioned that from the start. I felt like playing Sam & Max, and Day of the Tentacle. Maybe even some Indiania Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. Those are some good games.

I'll try that program out. I've been wanting to play these games for a long time, but never could because I couldn't get the sound to work.

Also, how do you get into DOS in Windows XP? Or do I just use the command prompt thing under Windows?

Just the command prompt thing man.

DOS doesn't exist as a standalone OS in Windows NT (2000 = NT5, XP = NT5.1)
