Changing HD in G1 Time Capsule?

I have seen online instructions on switching out the hard drive in a Time Capsule.

Today, I was at an Apple authorized (or whatever they call it) repair shop and was told, on no uncertain terms, that changing the hard drive will result in the TC losing many of it TC/Apple features and turn it into a basic NAS (He was not clear on what that meant and I did not have time to explore it further).

Has anyone done the switch with success? Anyone have a good, official-looking link that discusses the results of switching out HDs in TC?

As the title implies, the TC we were discussing was Generation 1, but the guy said this was true of all TCs.

One thing we feared about the Time Capsule when we first heard of it is that because it's essentially a closed box, if the hard drive or the router fails, you end up losing both. It's been shown that you can peel off the Time Capsule's rubbery bottom and remove the hard drive yourself, but Apple confirmed for us that even if you were to do that, you couldn't treat the Time Capsule as a standalone router, as the hard drive hosts vital data on it for the networking functionality as well.
