changing from IDE to SATA

Have IDE HDD installed in Asus 780g board, but need to replace the hard drive to new and pretty much SATA is only thing available. Can I just mirror the old IDE drive to new SATA, or do I have to reinstall the WinXP? Thanks

I've had sporratic luck migrating from IDE to SATA. Your best option is to image/backup first, then image. If it fails you are backed up. If a straight migration fails there's sysprep and lastly the recommended fresh install.

Most cloning programs - free or paid - will do this nicely.

They allow IDE>SATA, SATA>IDE and most will even offer to automatically re-size partitions if you're cloning a multi-partition drive to a higher-capacity drive.

I've used the free DOS utilities from WD and Maxtor for this, and I assume other drive manufacturer utilities perform as well.

Paid partition-management apps by Paragon, Acronis, etc. also work well.

Hope this helps!

if you set the SATA ports to IDE emulation in the BIOS you should be able to just clone the drive, point to the the SATA drive as the boot device and go. at least thats worked for me several times.

if your SATA ports are set to AHCI a straight clone may not work as XP probably wont have the AHCI drivers installed. you would need to reinstall (or repair maybe) and F6 the AHCI drivers in.

It's not the clone of the drive that's the issue.

Exactly, it depends on the setup and driver set installed. This is where sysprep helps as it "resets" everything for you.
