i have a leadtek board with nforce2 chipset which included onboard gf4MX. i jsut purchased a 9500pro and have some initial concerns. this is my first ATI card, and the horror stories with drivers has me concerned, especially given my whole MB is using nvidia drivers for everything, and its an all in one driver (MB, graphics, sound etc).

what do i need to do to ensure a relatively smooth transition from onboard gf4mx to the 9500pro. is it as simple as turning off the onboard graphics in the bios, slipping in the new card and installing the drivers? (dare i hope).

you need to go to add/remove programs and take out the Nvidia driver. Check in C: and/Program Files and delete any Nvidia folders.

Go into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software and HKEY_CURRENT_USER/software, delete any Nvidia entries.

Also use search to find any NV*.* entries and delete them. Be careful no to delete the few files for UT2003 or the one for the Nforce2 chipset.

I have switched back and forth from ATI to Nvidia numerous times using this procedure without any complications.

Ti 4800SE. 141shipped @ newegg. Neither card is going to play D3/HL2/Q4 any kinda well, so you might as well stick with a DX8 card for now. Even a 9800 Pro isn't gonna play HL2 that well.

If you're going to move from nVidia to ATI, you should know that nVidia's uninstall program often leaves dusty bits of itself on your drive. The best way I've found to clean your registry is to use a utility like Detonator Destroyer to remove all of it before you re-install the driver.

To get a clean install, after you uninstall the drivers, but while the machine is still working with the old card, set the video properties, and set the video properties for plain vanilla VGA 640 x 480 x 16 colors. Then, power down, install the new card, and reboot. Windows will find the new hardware and ask for your installation disk. You can either go from there, or cancel that, and, when you get to the (fugly) 640 x 480 desktop, start the installation CD to install the drivers for your new card.

Hope that helps. :)

ID software isnt crazy, i've said it once, i'll say it again: there is no way in hell that ID or valve will release a game that requires the top of the line video card to run. if you need a 9800 pro or a 5900 ultra to run D3/HL2, the ID and valve are gonna lose money to the point where they have to declare bankruptcy

Why you going ATI? Just curious
----------------

mostly bang for buck. the 9500pro seems about the fastest card with the most features for a price i was happy to spend. the other cards i was looking at were the fx5600 ultra or a ti4600. i dont need 10gajillion fps for my games, anything above 40fps is just fine. (everquest, star wars galaxies, BF1942).

thanks for the info all.

Why are you slinging this crap on different threads? Please stop making yourself look stupid.
