changing file icons

Is there a way to change the icons for a certain file type?

For example, say I wanted to change the .mp3 icon from the iTunes one to the default WMP one without associating them with WMP.

Specifically, I'm switching to MPC and as far as I know, it doesnt have icons built into it.

In Explorer: Tools->Options->Folder Options->File Types, choose .mp3 or whatever, then click advanced and change icon. Files that typically contain icons include DLL (dynamic link library) files, EXE (executable) files, and ICO (icon) files.

The above methods will work. Another way is to extract the icons of WMP and integrate them into MPC using Reshack. This will use all WMP icons whenever MPC is used.

Generally speaking there are two different things: what program always opens the file and what program this file type is associated with.
So you may open file with the new program and have icon of the former program at the same time.
