changing dvd region code in a regular 5.25" dvd-rom

All right, so I'm from Canada and travelling in Europe with my PowerBook. I just bought a dvd and ran into the ugly region codes thing 🙁

My pb is telling me that I can change the region code 5 times and I gather that that's a bit of a standard. I figure what I'll do is, when I get home, I'll rip the dvd and possibly reburn it to a north american coded dvd.

What I'm curious about is this 5-change limit. Is that an arbitrary limit that hardware makers do because the media industry tells them to? Is it standard across all computer equipment? I guess what I really want to know is if I will have the same limit on the dvd-rom in my pc at home.

Yes it's standard to have a low number like that. All drives have it unless you hack the firmware, though I don't know if everyone uses "5" instead of 4, 6, 7 etc.

Ok, so if it's just a firmware thing then it's not too hard to get around. I hope that doesn't constitute piracy-talk on these forums but this whole region thing sounds pretty shady from a legal perspective to me anyways. 😕

Can anyone vouch for the validity of this site? I came to it from wikipedia while reading up on this stuff but I don't like to flashing firmware and stuff unless I trust the source at least a bit 😛

See what people say on DVDRHelp.com, they are legit (have been around years, originally VCDHelp.com) or CDFreaks, if no one answers here.

... and I see no ethical problem with removing the region lock on a player. Note that if you leave it set as "all region" it won't play some discs, you still need to set it to a single region at a time for best compatibility.

There's a workaround without firmware manipulation. Just use Video Lan Client instead of Apple's regular DVD Player application and the regioncode won't be checked... At least it worked for me.

And just because you are travelling to Europe does not mean you have to change regions as long as your DVDs come from Region 1. The only reason to change would be to buy commercial DVDs over there.

Second sentence in the first post... 🙂

Out of curiousity, which DVD did you buy? (And why does your profile say that you're from GB?)

It was the Family Guy season 3. It was a lot cheaper here than what I remember it having been in Canada, so it was a bit of an impulse buy 😱

My profile says I'm in London because I'm living here for 3 months 🙂

Ooh, very nice. That worked, thanks 🙂
