Changing Drive letter -- want to keep apps working

Hey, guys

I added a new HDD and because of the way I want to organize it, it is likely that most of my apps will not work correctly (info in registry will be pointing to another Drive letter).

Is there any way other than keeping the drive letter the same as it is to maintain proggy functionality?

Example: Photoshop CS3 installed on Drive E. now on D -- will it float...errr, work?

If you add or remove phyiscal drive and it changes do it again.

Well, I got that part, mate. But say I open Battlefield 2. It was previously on Drive D:\. I added an HDD that I want to be D:\. The Hardware formally known as D:\ is now E:

So, I try to run the app but it won't start since the relevant info is not entered into the registry.

I wanted to know if there was a way to change this behavior.
Thanks, man

There's tons of entries in the Registry of XP (assuming this is XP, which you didn't say) that reference drive letters. XP has a reason for handling drive letters the way it does: To avoid problems like this when you add additional drives.

If you are intent on doing this, there are mainly two free options:
1) Remove and re-install the problem programs. Do the removal BEFORE changing drive letters, and do the install AFTER changing drive letters.
2) Try to find the offending Registry entries and manually change them. I suggest backing up the Registry before proceeding.

you could use 0roo0roo's suggestion instead. partition magic comes with a tool that scans your computer and will let you do exactly this.

Well, I decided to do a fresh install...

thanks for all the suggestions anyway. It will be good for future reference. It makes sense to uninstall then install the wanted apps but I had so damn many that would be a pain + possible the registry could remain cluttered.

As for partition magic, I'll look into it. I've been meaning to buy a nice partitioning proggy.

Thanks all!
