Changing corporate antivirus. What is better, smaller than Symantec?

For years we've used Symantec Corporate AV, and while its not a bad AV product, it does seem to tax the system resources a little bit more than we would like to see. It is also a tad pricey, at around $2300 a year for the 70 PCs on a network I service.

What is a good, cost effective replacement for symantec corporate? So far, I've looked at AVG corporate, and it seems very cheap. But, Ive yet to test it under real world conditions.

This AV product, whichever we buy, will be running on windows 2000 server box, and it will need to push out updates via a client/server type enviroment, where the PCs will look to the server for updates and not on their own.

Kaspersky is widely considered to be the top AV out there. It's lighter on system resources, but not by much IIRC. However, it has the bests detection ratings out there.

If you want something that's lighter but still has a good detection rate, I'd recommend Avira.

IIRC Kaperksky's detection rating was something like 99.5%, while Avira was about 95%

Thanks. I've contacted the Kaspersky sales team for a quote. Two servers, 75 workstations.

We use Computer Associates. Uses almost no resources at all and has never causes an application compatibility problem and runs on almost every platform. The description said you could push updates to the client software, but I never bothered seeing if that worked.

But, realistically, AV is one of the least effective ways to keep your network clear of viruses. So I'd look for stability and easy of administration over detection rate.

I'd be interested in knowing what the quote was, too. I've been using SAV Corp for years, and have probably stayed with it only because I'm very familiar with it. Might be time to check out some other solutions out there.

same here...im also looking into kaspersky and nod32.

kaspersky seem to have a slightly better detection rate (not to say that nod32 isnt any slouch either, its right up there too), while nod32 is a bit easier on the resources (but again, kaspersky is also good on resources too).

ive only stayed with symantec antivirus because im so familiar with it, but it does take up quite a bit of resources.

I use Kaspersky for my personal machines but have never used it in the corporate world where IT needs to administer it. How easy is it to administer remotely and push out updates and such?

We've had a couple of schools switch to this, mostly because the pricing structure was dramatically better. The techs have said they were happy with program itself.
