Changing Case Fan Voltage with Fan Controller Blackens Screen

Very strange why this would happen as I'm using the Fan Controller that comes with the Fractal ARC Midi R2 feed directly from a Molex connected to an XFX 850W Pro Black Edition fully modular PSU. The Fan Controller has no connection to the Main Board or BIOS nor the Operating System.

The Fan Controller manually changes the Voltage of 3 Fractal 140mm Case Fans in 5, 7 and 12 Volt increments to vary the Fan Speed.

Say I've got the Fan Controller set in the Medium Speed setting of 7 Volts. After I've booted in to Windows, if I flip the Fan Controller to Max, the 3rd Position to run at 12 Volts - The Screen goes BLACK and I have to Ctrl/Esc, Tab, Tab and Enter to Shut the OS down.

Upon Reboot the Screen is OK running the Case Fans at 12v but if I toggle the Fan speed back to any other Speed the screen will blacken again. It's as if I loose power to the PCIe Video Card.

Seems I have to preset the Casing Fan Voltage prior Booting.

All Voltages from the PSU are Bang right on. I've used Manual Fans Controllers in the past with Variable Potentiometers without issues to control multiple case fans on other platforms.

I'm running an ASUS P8Z68ProV Gen3 with an i7 2700K at 4.7G's cooled by a Corsair H110 which has Fans controlled by PWM set in BIOS in Extreme Mode. My Video Card is an EVGA e-GeForce GTX 280 with the latest 320 Drivers - if that means anything.

I'm thinking the same thing a Short - Perhaps in the Fractal Control Modual between the Fan Controller and the USB Ports such that power for some reason gets to a USB3 Port when sliding the switch to indicate that a USB Device occupies the Port but there isn't any. The USB3 Ports do work.

I do not think changing the Molex for the Fan Controller to another PSU OutPut would make any difference as the PSU outputs all originate from the same 12v Rail.

PS:Well I looked at the Variable Fan Control Sx and can't see any physical indications of a short either in it or to the USB Ports. I also plugged the Molex feed into another PSU Outlet and the same thing happens.

This is crazy. Windows can't see a signal from a disconnected source - So I would say there is either an internal short in the Fan controller or they have wired it wrong and the PSU receives a Spike that knocks out my Video Card, USB Mouse and Keyboard when sliding the Sx.

Yet the Fans do change Speed when the Sx position is in the 5, 7 and 12v locations.

WEIRD and WIRED - LOL

Any How - I'm waiting e-mail replay from Fractal Design. Canadians evidently can not contact them by Phone.

I would agree it's likely a short inside the fan voltage control switch. Can adjust the voltage while it's off and restart the system and have the fans operate in all 3 positions?

No response from Fractal Design re my 2 E-Mails about the faulty Fan Control Switch on my ARC Midi R2.

I have a hardline # for American support 855-446-3722 (855-I-GO-FRAC) but denied service saying: "Due to technical difficulties we can not complete your call." Europeans also have a support # but there is no Canadian phone number.

If they don't answer their E-Mail, how do Canadians contact Fractal Design?

AH! Right after I posted asking for assistance re contacting Fractal they responded to my E-Mail and all is well. They are sending me a replacement Fan Controller - Thanks for you In Put Anand Tech Members ;o)
