OK, I have a few questions.....
first...I saw a 96 mitsubishi eclipse for $6000 that has 54k miles on it. It, however, was really stripped down. It had no RPM gauge, no power windows, and no power locks. It did have a/c and a cd player though. Here is what I want to know. Is it possible to make it have power windows? Or will it cost too much and I should just spend teh extra cash and get a higher end model? Is it possible to put a RPM gauge in the car? I really could care less about power locks, cause its a 2 door car.

First, if you call it "the rpm guage" you have to ask yourself if you really need it. Its a tachometer and a good aftermarket tachomete costs about $100. If you just like watching something move though you can buy an inaccurate one at autozone for about $30. Anyway you can add powerwindows usually, but thats a bit of work, power locks usually isn't too much more difficult either, but I'm personally lazy so I'd just look for a car that has them.

hmmm...I just looked at some websites...and it looks like that there may be some panel cutting involved. Is that only for the universal kits? Cause don't some cars have the holes already in there, but they are just blocked off?

WTH???? 'stripped down' simply because it doesn't have power windows and power locks??? Talk about d@mn lazy....Try to buy an old car, you don't get those things, heck on some cars you don't get power steering....Just build some arm muscles and move that d@mn window wiper.... :)

Seriously tho, I don't see the problem....

gotta agree with the last guy. It a small little 2 door car it isn't that hard to reach across and roll up/down a window or lock/unlock a door. Its different when its something like my 67 galaxie 2 door where if it starts raining while on the road I have to slide over to the middle and use my left foot for gas and brake while I try to get the old sticky window to go up :). In my little nissian truck it isn't a big deal, I can just reach right across it.

Here's a thought my dad passed on to me:

"I've never seen a 10-year old car with manual windows that didn't work"

Power windows are nice, but they are prone to problems. Either if you do it yourself or buy a used car with them, you'll eventually run into problems with the switch, wiring, or the motor itself burning up. Manual windows take a little more effort, but they still work on the above mentioned 67 Galaxie. Power windows sure don't last 30 years. Then you end up with that 'one' window that won't open (we all know someone who drives this car...)

If you're mechanically inclined, chances are that the instrument panel is a direct swap with one that has a tach. The doors may also already have the eletrical connectors inside for the power locks and windows. Power windows may be more work since you'll need different door panels.

Try http://www.dsmtrader.com/ for parts.

I'm a big fan of small cars and one of my pet peeves is a small car with power windows or doors. I mean, when I can reach out and touch the passenger door pretty easily it seems absolutely silly to have these things powered.

Another of my peeves is a tachometer on an automatic transmission car. Just as useful as tits on a bull.

The main benefit to power windows is the ability to roll down the back passenger window on the fly. I'm guessing, though, that this sort of driver would have the A/C on well before going so far as to roll down a window.

Not necessarily so. I have a 97 GTP with some mods (exhaust, pulley, suspension) that I race (both street and at KCIR). Even though the car is an automatic, I use the tach to tell when to manually shift from 2nd to 3rd and it also helps in guaging how the car is running, if there is a slight miss, if my IAC is bad etc. I could use it to tell if there is slippage in the tranny, however minute it may be. Tach's are not just looks for some people. The majority--sure, unnecessary, but for some, they are well used tools.

Yes it is an automatic, and I know that the tach. (I like to call it an RPM gauge:eek:) is uselss on an automatic, but I want it just for look. It just looks empty without it. Its like having a huge ass rear end spoiler on a front wheel drive car. It's just for look. As for power windows....its prereference. I just prefer power windows cause it is more convenient. It is not a good idea to open or close non-powered windows while going 30mph.
