seems like a good thing, if they can focus more resources on Firefox and Thunderbird. I look forward to the day these apps give me a reason to switch from IE/Outlook 2003.

I don't expect this to noticeably help or hurt the development of Firefox - and based on the number of people who expressed interest in contributing to SeaMonkey (suite's codename), it might actually HELP Mozilla.

You know, i couldn't stop thinking about this whole "surprising" mess and what may came up with the separation of Seamonkey from Mozilla Foundation ...

The separation may bring positive and negative points to either firefox/thunderbird/etc (FF) or SeaMonkey/mozilla suite (SM).
FF/TB will receive more development time since MoFo can now focus more on getting these products stabilized and secured.
SM will get its own dedicated team of supporters as well, who will also focus on building upon the stabilized suite.

In the end, these two teams may even end up as new players in the browser war, which is starting to heat up again. The difference, however, is that FF and SM might also be involved in their own civil war against each other, in addition to the war against MSIE 7, Opera, Safari, and tons others.

Hopefully, though, the FF and SM forces will decide to collaborate and continue to share some of their codebase like they are doing now, and help building each other. After all, they all started from the same root ....
