Hi all,

I am on XP Pro SP2. My firewall is ON and only LimeWire allowed.

I have Spyware S & D and Ad ware running in the background and I do serches every day

For some reason "Something" changes my custom IE homepage settings which I set to "About:Blank" to:
www.msn.com

What can it be and how do I get rid of it?

I've blocked this address in the Internet Options CP but it keeps coming back

TIA :disgust:

What version of adaware are you using. I use spybot and adaware also and thought I was 100% clean. Then I downloaded the latest adawareSE and it found stuff. Try downloading the latest and doing a full scan and see if it picks anything up.

Or it could be one of those IE enhancements in SP2. :)

I AM using the latest AdAware (SE). The thing is, while I installed SP2 Adaware kept asking me if I allow or refuse some changes. Since they all seemed to stem from SP2 I allowed them. Maybe I shouldn't have. I know I have the option of uninstalling sp2 and re-install without allowing anything new Go figure . . .

What ARE those "Enhancements" in IE?

Did this happen after installing XP SP2? It probably just set the homepage back to MS stock default settings, which I think is normally msn.com.

Hi,

Just for your information - I've installed SP2 and it didn't change my homepage. I also use Ad-Aware SE (Pro) v1.03 without problems.

Good luck,

Andy

I believe this is an SP2 issue rather than spyware/adware outcome as the address chages to msn.com - that what happens after you click on "Reset Web Settings" under Programs tab on Internet Options; this is MS related for sure.

Hi,

Probably is MS related, but he said that this is a recurring problem - so I guess not related to clicking "Reset Web Settings".

Cheers,

Andy

Trent, this IS a recurring problem.
One: I can click on Reset in programs tab or I can click on Use Blank in General Tab
It changes to About:Blank as home page but the next time I launch IE it's again on msn

Two: I had this problem before SP2.
For quite a while I didn't have it because I wasn't using IE At All. (was using Mozilla), but as soon as I launched IE it came back again.
I set the most stringent security definitions in the Security tab (internet options) in the 4 zones (Internet, Locaal Intranet, Trusted Sites and Restricted Sites) by selecting the Custom option and disabling: Active-x, script, JVM, and anything that looked to me as opening a port to malware. I would say that IE was literally crippled nd could not go anywhere at all except - you guest it - www.msn.com
(Which was alredy defined as a blocked site)

Isn't this a MS deliberately planted bug?

Sorry I can't help more - but I don't think this is a deliberate MSN bug (or we'd all have it).

Good luck,

Andy

Adaware is the source of your problem. It detects your homepage as About:blank as a browser hijack.

Well, that's very interesting because every time I run Adware I get just one suspicious event and it's a "possible browser hijack attempt"
So be it, I'll try other home pages and see.

Thank you very much
