Changed thermal paste from stock on Arctic Cooler 64 pro cooler

What might be the cause of this? did i not put enough Arctic 5 silver on the cpu?

I'm trying to get my new fx-55 to 3ghz and keep those temps down.
 
the included paste is actually better than AS5 even though it appears pretty thick. I also noticed a 1-2 degree rise once I changed out the paste to AS5.
 
My current favorite is MX-1, and I don't expect to change my mind any time soon...

Give it a try and see what you think! 😉

Heh! Sounds like MX-1 to me...

MX-1 looks like dried up toothpaste. It was a little disconcerting at first, but now that I'm used to applying it -- I love it! 🙂

Moving on from the heat pipes, we notice that there is a thermal paste all ready applied to the copper base of the cooler. This first reminded me of the many AMD stock coolers that have a similar paste applied to them. I almost removed this and applied my own AS5 but decided that I would give this a go and see what it had to offer. Upon further review, Arctic Cooling has developed this thermal paste on their own and has named it MX-1.

Well I have read that it is a PITA to apply it yourself.

It's just different, that's all -- takes a while to get used to...

After you use it a couple of times, you'll get the hang of it!

Everything else seems 'runny' now, you know? LoL! 🙂
 
Why did you feel the need to remove Arctic's thermal paste? It was desgined to work with that. I just left it on and alone.
 
How hard is it to remove the Heatsink from the CPU using MX-1? It sounds like that stuff will cement the 2 together.

When I was doing some cleaning of my fans and heatsinks it was pain to get off my Venus 12 from the CPU using AS5.

I only 'discovered' MX-1 in, like, May... plus I've pulled my HSF several times since then, so the jury is still out. It hasn't been a problem so far.

It kind of reminds me a zinc oxide, if you've ever worked with that. I doubt that it's going to dry out, but who knows? Time will tell... 😉

Thermal paste is not a good conductor of heat. It's just there as filler so there's no gaps since air is an insulator. Usually the less you use the better, as long as you can gaurantee 100% contact with no air pockets.

Boyo people still are under the false impression that all thermal past shipped with heatsinks cannot possibly be any good.....

Thus they waste there money and also purchase additional thermal paste..lol
 
AS5 is certainly better then some of the stuff you get as stock but not always. i put some on my graphic card and it did lower temps. sometimes the stock paste is better. BTW, it takes some time for the AS5 to "burn in". that is, to fill all the gaps. this is well known. overtime, temps should lower. this happens after about 100-200 hours.
