*changed* getting a new laptop

I configured it at Compaqs website and the estimated hsip date is Sept 15, I am already in school then🙁 Guess I will have to settle for "less". Now I am deciding on whether i should get a Dell or Gateway notebook. If I get a Dell, I might be able to upgrade it to a 9000, but if I get a Gateway, I get a 15.7" screen.

ERRRRRRRR....I just realized taht Dell has a two week est. time for the laptop to get to my house. I should of ordered earlier.

edit: you think Gateway has an earlier arrival time?

You should wait for the 9000, have some patience, not having that new laptop for a few weeks to a month isn't going to kill you.
Doom3 is going to totally raise the bar for games, and Carmack has said you need at least a 9000 mobility to play Doom 3, so basically if you want to play newer games, you will get a little patience and wait.

I agree. Obviously gaming must be at least a small interest for you other wise you wouldn't be concerned. I would definitely hold off a few weeks for the 9000, anything else would be uncivilized.

It's gonna suck cause I really do not want to buy a Compaq and if that Sept 15 date is fo rteh Compaq only, that means I waited for nothing. I move in on Sept 14, so that means no matter what, I will arrive on campus w/o a computer because I really do not feel like lugging my desktop from lowell, to boston and back. I really want to get my laptop ASAP so i do not have to keep using teh school computers just do simple things such AT messegeboards. In the end, I'm probably gonna just settle for a 64 MB 7500. I talked to gateway today and they said if I do regular shipping, they can have a notebook shipped to me by Sept. 16. However, what if the 9000 starts shipping by then? Then i iwll want to ship it back, which is a compte waste of time. I guess I will have to settle for a 7500. Oh well, the chip cannot be that "bad".

OK, i decided to just get the Gateway with the 7500. The way I see it, it's my freshman year in college and I should just be studying anyways (yeah right😉) and if I wanna play a game, there are plenty of titles out there that i can play, just not Doom III or possibly Unreal 2002. Also, I imagine in 6 months or by this time next year, the prices on computer parts will be dam low so I will be able to build a killer desktop for cheap (everythign except the videocard) and be able to play the latest games😀
