Changed CPU, now laptop is dead?? HELP!

OK, I bought a Compaq Presario 1700T which came with an 800mhz celeron. I had an old 850mhz P3 cpu from another laptop that was destroyed from water damage. I figured the CPU was fine. Anyway, I installed the new cpu in this laptop and it wouldn't boot. Everything turned on, but the screen was blank. I immediately took it back out and returned the celeron into it, only to find that it does the same thing. HDD spins, fan spins, but no screen. Tried an external monitor as well, nothing. It simply will not boot. I have heard that I should try clearing the CMOS. Would this help? It is a REAL pain to disassemble these things. Does anyone have any ideas? Could I have permanently damaged the computer? 🙁

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
