I suspect it something you aren't meant to change.

Anyway, as I understand it the Xbox will not recognise a 'normal' HDD - only the one supplied.

They don't ban you because they don't like you, they ban you for cheating, or using a mod chip (mod chips are illegal).

I can do what I want with something I own. You can disallow me from connecting to your network if I mod my hardware, but I can still do whatever I want to my hardware.

I suspect that this is not true from the strictly legal sense. Changing your Hard Drive key to get onto Xbox live could probably be considered some form of "hacking".

Sure you can do whatever you want with your hardware. And because you foolishly tried signing on to XBox Live with the mod chip enabled, you got booted off their service.

Check the forums at www.xbox-scene.com for information on possible ways to changes your HD key. Not sure if this would be considered hacking or not, but I doubt that this is kosher for this messageboard.

Actually, according to the law, you can't.

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DCMA) says so.

Obviously a piece of very controversial legislation, but until challenged in court, you are, technically speaking, wrong on that point.

EDIT: Assuming you're in the United States

Heh, for a moment, I forgot that the "Land of the Free" is actually the "Land of the rapidly disappearing freedoms".
