change windows xp product id?

My acer is bombing out, can't get it running long enough to get a disk image.

Am trying to install my Windows XP prof on it, and change the product ID back to the one on the acer laptop.
Is there a way to do this? I have an oem license for win xp pro for the laptop, so I'm not cheating anyone out of a license fee.
Ideas?

Thanks!

Wayne

What OS is on the Acer? You can use a generic OEM OS cd that matches what the Acer shipped with and then use the product key that should be affixed to the Acer's chassis.

FWIW if you're using the product key from the laptop on the Acer desktop that is piracy.

How so? I own the acer laptop, I bought Win xp pro with it, I am temporarily(?) installing an OEM Win XP that I also own but for my desktop. I am trying to change the win xp pro oem product code back to what it was originally on the acer..it belongs i there...
I will end up having 2 machines, each with their own Win XP Prof license. The Acer restore disks with the win xp code embedded in it, isn't working. The only way i am going to get it going again is to install another xp pro and then change the product code on iit, to what is on the acer...
Or am I missing something?

Thanks,
Wayne
