Change screen res at app launch

is it possible to have an application change the screen resolution and/or color depth at launch and then back after it closes?

i was taking a look in the registry to see what i could find and came across this key

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\VIDEO

i know there are apps that do this but i would like to do it without one if possible...
