Change of Careers

Hi all,

I am currently a chemical engineer working in industry (2.5 years work experience). My job is okay and pays the bills. Unfortunately I just don't enjoy it as much as I'd like for something I am going to be doing for the rest of my life.

I'd like to enter into IT. As IT is a broad field let me describe what I'd like to be doing. I'd like to work small to mid size company. I would be involved in solving day to day hardware and software problems, be responsible for purchasing decisions, and be responsible for the network servers/email. Of those I would say I could easily do the first two but would need training to handle network. I 'd prefer minimal programming (other then some scripts/html).

I realize switching fields would likely mean a lower salary but I despite that I'd still be interested finding what it would take to switch fields.

My plethora of questions for the forum are:

What certifications would I need to be marketable?

What else would I need to do?

How hard would it be to market myself with a such a large u-turn in careers?

What could I expect for a starting salary in a major city such as Atlanta?

Thank you
