Change Modem??? UPDATE Update

Verizon is my DSL provider.
I've been on this service for at least 7 years with the same modem. If my memory is right I should have the 3 megabit download service.
Using the Verizon Speedtest site I never get speeds above 1.4 megabit. Most times they are around 900kb to just under 1 megabit. I've seen speeds as slow as 300 kb.

I know distance from the central office and the quality of the cable and so on will affect download speeds.
What I am curious about is will changing the modem to a new one help improve the speeds?
My daughter just switched from Verizon DSL to Comcast cable. She is taking advantage of the package deal from Comcast. Her DSL speeds were around 750 k beacuse of her distance from the central office. With Comcast she is always above 4.4 megabit!!!

She gave me her DSL modem. If I use the newer modem,, what do I have to do to make it work? I tried to just swap it out by removing the old modem and plugging in the new modem and it didn't work.
I would get a message saying I was disconnected or no longer a customer.
My thoughts at 2 am are that I have to reinstall the software when I use the newer modem. Am I right??? I am assuming that my daughters old sign on and password are stored in the modem she gave me and I will have to use sotware to access the modem and change the signon and password to mine.
I'd like to be able to use the new modem and even if the download speed doesn't improve I will have a spare modem as a backup
And and ALL help is needed

The DSL provider for both systems was Verizon so those #'s should be the same. What are the brand and models of the modems? Download the manuals for the modems and it should tell you how to access the config page. Generally you open your browser and put the IP in the address window and hit enter. The default IP address for the westell 6100 is 192.168.1.1 . My DSL uses PPOEE sign-on and the account name - password are stored in the Westell modem/router. I assume that's where the problem is.

Verizon in PGH now offers a free wireless enabled 4-port westell 327 with 3 Mb service for $29.95 a month as far as I know. What are you paying from 7 years ago?

My old modem is a Westell B9036r515-01. The Westell site so longer supports this modem. What documentation that is on the site is just general and doesn't give any details. (Just where to plug the wires into on the modem)
The modem my daughter gave me is A90-220015-04. The Westell site says that this was made for Verizon and to cantact them.
Yes, I do think the account name and password are stored in the new modem. That's why when I access my account using my daughters modem I get the message that the account is not in service. (or somethng like that.)
I never paid the "normal" amount for my dsl service as I worked for Verizon and have since retired. I currently pay $31.57 for my service.
I might call Verizon and ask about getting the new modem. The last time I talked to them (around the time I retired they told me I would loose my discount if I made any changes) Then again,,, what good is any discount or price when you don't get the product you should have!!!

A fast update.
I spent 2 hours on line with a VZ tech support expert yesterday.
And,,, my line is ok,,, the central office equipment is ok,,, etc. etc. etc.
I told them I had a newer modem and they told me to swap out my old modem and use the new modem. That didn't work. They asked for the newer modem model number and checked out the info on it. Um,,,, tech said the modem was NOT COMPATABLE WITH MY SERVICE!!! I asked how it worked on my daughters service and didn't get a answer.
So, what is the answer???????? Tech support said it was MY MODEM causing slow downloads and said I should get a new modem. OK,,,, I called the number tech support gave me and told them the problem. After talking to THREE different people including a shipping manager I finally got some results. I told them I was about to jump to Comcast if the problem wasn't taken care of. All of a sudden I get transferred again and now I am a valued customer!!!!!
Verizon is going to send me a complete and new install kit,,, modem, etc, etc. I should have it in 3 to 5 days. And,,, I don't have to pay.
Also,,, when reading the morning newspaper I found a article that Verizon will have FIOS in my cummunity by the end of the year. I'll jump to that once I see fiber in front of my house!!!

That's good to hear. It wouldn't say much about Verizon if they wouldn't take care of thier own retirees to the same extent as new customers. A friend recently got the 3 Mb deal for $29.95 in Mt Washington and says it's great.

The new modem came today. (Monday)
I installed it and,,,, it didn't work!!! !@#$%
Tried several things and nothing.
Finally gave in and called tech support. Got a lady that had a accent I had trouble understanding. One hour later we got the modem to work. Instead of installing it as a "existing user" I had to install it as a "New user"
That set the logon and pasword into the mosem and awaaaaaay I went.
Downloads of 2.9 meg when I use the Verizon speed test and downloads of 2.7 meg when I use the speed test on the Broadband (former DSL Reports site)
My old modem still works and I did a reset on my daughters modem and got that to work as a spare. The old modem and my daughters won't go above 1.4 meg downoalds. They will be kept as a spare.
Once VZ strings fiber to my house I am going to FIOS!!!
