We had someone leave our office recently and someone new is using their PC.

It's just a pet peeve, but we wanted to get rid of that old person's name on the welcome screen for Office 2000 when you start an app like Word. I've checked the entire registry and even any files on the drive containing the name - no luck! Where do they hide this thing? Can I change it?? Thanks in advance!

As long as the Office install was on the local HD, the that name has to be in the registry.

I've changed that key several times.

I've done it before in Office 97, but I've search this registry numerous times with no such luck. ARGH.

Look for the keys "DefName", "ReplyMessageComment", and "RegOwner".

The reason I asked was because they make you register so I didn't know if maybe MS kept a database and if one person uses a cd-key to register it is no longer able to register again.

First of all, they don't make you register. Second, as long as you have the licenses, (and even if you don't) there is nothing physically stopping you from using the same cd-key and cd on multiple installs. i.e: A guy has just been contracted to install Windows 98se, Office 2000, and various other programs on a corprate network of around 1500 computers. Company A owns enough licenses to fullfill the network, so every thing is legite. But rather than going around with ~1500 cds/cd-keys, computer guy creates an image of a standard install platform on one harddrive, and copies it to all the other computers on the network, using the same cd-key that was used on the initial computer.

I tried changing all the keys you mentioned and it still hasn't changed the Office 2K intro screen upon program start. It must be kept in a file or something.

If it's anything like Office 97, the name is inserted into the individual program files at installation time.

You will need to uninstall and then reinstall to change the name.

Actually, from a disk I tried, I was only able to use the serial number once. It is logged into a database at MS. Maybe if you used the same exact registration info as the original licenser, it would work.
