Change in my cat's behavior

Cliffs available at the bottom.

We own two cats, one male, one female. The male cat, Monroe, is (or was) one of the most social and well adjusted cats I've ever known. Many people have commented on how he acts very much like a dog in many ways. Loves people, very happy in general, gets into stuff like all cats do etc... in general an awesome cat.

Ok, my wife and I go away for the weekend, and my Aunt takes care of the cats for us. Everything seems fine. Aunt says there were no issues during our weekend away (Aunt has a heart of gold towards everything, so abuse from her is completely out of the question).

We come home from our weekend getaway, and Monroe is not the same cat. His formerly friendly behavior has given away to him being extremely skittish about anything. He is terrified of our bed, whereas before he routinely slept with us and generally made a pain of himself. If I put him on the bed, he might as well be trapped in an open cage, as he is so nervous about everything around him that he can barely force himself to move. I have to pick him up and put him on the floor. In some parts of the house he is fine, but in others he acts the same way as our bed... he gets into that "I've never seen this" mode, stalks very cautiously up to whatever he is concerned about, and if you make the slightest sound he jumps straight up in the air. For a while I thought he was having problems seeing, but I've tested that with various treats and he seems to see them just fine.

Suffice it to say this new behavior is extremely odd and disconcerting, especially for a cat that was previously very well adjusted. Has anyone ever have this happen before, and if so, were you able to correct it?

And yes, I already have a vet appointment scheduled.

Cliffs:
1. Our male cat was extremely friendly, even dog like
2. We go away for the weekend, come back, cat has changed
3. Cat now is extremely nervous/skittish, and terrified of various objects he used to love, including his former favorite sleeping spot, our bed.
4. No clue what caused it, would love to hear any ideas.
5. going to the vet on Friday to get him checked out.

Not sure how this got double posted, but sorry anyways. I'll try to kill the other thread.

Exactly my thought as well.

I'm certain it is the same cat. Same purr, same meow, same collar (red with little cows on it). It is the same cat, but different behavior.

www.familywatchdog.us can easily explain your cat's odd behavior. Kitty was violated...

Seriously though. Cat's are weird and easily get mad. He might just be pissed that you left for the weekend. I have two cats, and when I take the younger one out of the house for any reason, ie. the vet, the older one acts like he has never seen him before when we return. The older one goes back to normal in about 3 or 4 days...

Any environmental changes? Like, did your aunt bring over things with her that may have spooked the cat?

Any chance of an infestation? (bug, rodent, bird)

Well, we are moving and did recently have our house on the market for sale. He has been fine up this point, however, and there were no additional changes to the house over the weekend.

That happened on Gilligans' Island, but it was a butterfly, not a cat.

We went away for 5 days recently and let our two cats home alone (with plenty of food and water and a automatic litterbox of course) and when we got back the male didn't even come to greet us at the door like he always does and he'd always want to sit on my lap whenever I'd be on the couch watching TV but wouldn't come near me.

After a few days of being home though, he went back to normal and almost seems even more affectionate than before we left.

Cats are weird like that.

The vet visit is a good idea but cats are somewhat mercurial by nature. Just treat him like you normally do and he will probably return to his old habits until you start to pack for your move. You may want to look around a bit for some advice on helping your cats deal with the move. Most cats do not deal well with moving but there are things you can do to ease the transition.
